Pace gallery asked us to design Robert Nava’s first monograph, focusing around his London exhibition, Thunderbolt Disco.
Responding to the energetic nature of his works, we proposed a bold use of colour and typography throughout. In order to achieve vividly accurate reproductions of Robert’s work we printed the book in 8 colours.
The book is heavily illustrated with artwork images, including details of Nava’s large-scale battle scene paintings and other selected works, installation views of the exhibition in London and studio photographs. Scattered throughout are facsimile reproductions of pages from Robert’s sketchbooks.
“This was one of those projects where we could really go large with colour to capture Robert Nava's love of bold, bright neon paints. We needed this first monograph on the New-York based artist to be high-impact and achieved this with coloured boards, contrasting foiling, and eye-popping endpapers. With the addition of candid photos of the artist in his studio environment and tipped-in facsimiles of pages from his notebooks, the book offers an intimate view of his process as well as striking reproductions of his large-scale paintings. Robert was delighted with the result!”
